It is the design.

Media used to have natural ends

Almost every older form of media came with built-in stopping points. A book ended. A magazine ran out of pages. A television show finished and the credits rolled. What to do with this

You do not need to feel tricked, but it helps to feel informed. The reason you can scroll for forty minutes without meaning to is not that you lack discipline. It is that the design has removed every natural moment where discipline would normally kick in. The page never ends, the video never pauses, the refresh always hints at more.

Knowing this suggests a simple counter-move: put the stopping cues back yourself. Set a timer so there is an ending. Turn off autoplay so the gap between videos returns. Decide in advance how long you will scroll, so you carry your own end into a feed that refuses to provide one. You are reintroducing the choice point the design deleted. The feed will not end on its own, so you get to be the ending.
